Fields Medal Jean-Christophe Yoccoz died on September 3rd, 2016
After graduating from the Ecole Normale Superieure, Jean-Christophe Yoccoz was a junior researcher at the CNRS from 1979 to 1988 and taught as a Professor at Orsay University onwards.
In 1994, he awarded the Fields Medal for his works on dynamical systems. A Professor at the College de France since 1996, he was holding the Chair of Differential equations and dynamical systems.
A member of the French Academy of Sciences since 1994, he also was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. He maintained close relationships with Brazil from the time when he did his military service at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro. Artur Avila, 2014 Fields medal, had come to France to work with him.
Jean-Christophe Yoccoz died on September 3rd at the age of 59. The mathematical community loses a man of great kindness and a rare mathematican whose works have had a great influence on his domain.
