Book presentation
Matheuses: les filles sont l'avenir des maths is an encounter between three worlds: that of teenage girls, that of mathematics and that of sociology.
The book is the result of a sociological survey of 45 16-year-old girls who took part in Les Cigales, single-sex mathematics courses organized by members of the Institut de Mathématiques de Marseille and the Laboratoire d'Informatique et Systèmes at the Centre International des Mathématiques de Marseille. With 10 chapters providing scientific answers to specific questions, Matheuses deconstructs inequalities in mathematics and computer science, with a view to combating them more effectively.
Making girls' voices heard in maths
By giving a voice to teenage girls, Matheuses aims to help them understand their experience, to explain the consequences of the current exclusion of women from the sciences, and to point the way towards equality.
Making sociological research accessible
A scientific book for the general public, Matheuses is an introduction to the social sciences. The illustrations and scientific mediation make the results of research accessible to teenage girls, their entourage and the mathematical and educational community.
Understanding maths for better practice
To encourage girls to choose the mathematics field, Matheuses makes it possible to move immediately from understanding to practice: each sociology chapter is followed by an open-ended maths problem, accessible from the first year, to discover the research process.
