ECM 2024: a French presence strengthened by its diversity
From July 15 to 19, 2024, nearly 1,400 participants from 70 different countries gathered in Seville for the 9th European Congress of Mathematics. The French mathematical community was represented by 6 speakers, 4 prestigious prizes and 1 Math in France stand.

The presence of this stand, coordinated by Insmi, would not have been complete without our partners: the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (Cirm), the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES), the Centre international de mathématiques pures et appliquées (CIMPA), the Centre Mersenne and the Fondation sciences mathématiques de Paris (FSMP).

4 prizes awarded to scientists from the French community
The European Mathematical Society (EMS) has set up a number of prestigious prizes between 1992 and 2023: the EMS prizes, the Félix Klein prize, the Otto Neugebauer prize, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) Lanczos prize for mathematical software and the Paul Lévy prize for probability theory.
Awarded every four years at the ECM, calls for nominations for these prizes are published a year in advance. At each ECM, up to ten EMS prizes are awarded to researchers under 35 years of age at the time of nomination, of European nationality or working in Europe, in recognition of excellent contributions in the field of mathematics.
In 2024, five researchers based in France received EMS awards:
- Jacek Jendrej, CNRS research fellow at the Laboratoire Analyse, Géométrie et Applications - LAGA (Université Sorbonne Paris Nord / CNRS), winner of an EMS Prize
- Danylo Radchenko, CNRS research fellow at Laboratoire Paul Painlevé (CNRS / Université de Lille / Inria), winner of an EMS Prize.
- Fabien Casenave, Research Director at Safran and winner of the Felix Klein Prize
- Jean-Yves L'Excellent (Inria, ENS Lyon) and Patrick Amestoy (ENS Lyon) for their MUMPS software, (in collaboration with Théo Mary, CNRS/Sorbonne University), winners of the Lanczos Prize.

Diverse partners under a single banner: Math in France
The only country stand among the twenty or so present at the Congress, the Math in France stand stood out for the diversity of its offering under a single banner. The stand was an opportunity to assert the French presence at the congress, to meet participants and to publicize the missions of the various partners and national mathematical research institutions. In addition to distributing goodies and leaflets, the stand also showcased a number of recent dissemination initiatives: l'Univers des mathématiques map, Matheuses. Les filles, avenir des mathématiques (Perronnet, Marc & Paris-Romaskevich, 2024) and Why do we lean into corners? Le sport expliqué par les sciences en 40 questions (Aftalion, 2021), videos presenting CNRS talents, Cigales, comic strips by Laurent Schwartz (Marie, Realdini & Daniel, 2024) and Sophie Germain (Tartaglini, Philippini & Ferrari, 2021)...
Coordinated by Insmi, the presence of this stand would not have been complete without our UAR and our partners: the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (Cirm), the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES), the Centre international de mathématiques pures et appliquées (CIMPA), the Centre Mersenne and the Fondation sciences mathématiques de Paris (FSMP), to all of whom we extend our warmest thanks. The richness of this diversity was greatly appreciated by all Congress participants.
