The International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemestry (IUPAC) are lead applicants, together with 8 supporting partners, of the 3-year project "A Global Approach to the Gender Gap in Mathematical and Natural Sciences : How to Measure It, How to Reduce It ?", with financial support from the International Council for Science (ICSU). The project aims to produce sound data to support the choices of interventions that ICSU and member unions can feasibly undertake.

The project constitutes an interdisciplinary collaboration. The gender gap problem will be addressed in the following disciplines: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy and Biology.

The project consists of three tasks. Tasks 1 and 2 provide data on which to base conclusions, to direct actions to attract and retaining women in science, and to develop and evaluate practical recommendations. Task 3 collects information on effective practices.
